Professional mentoring

Mentoring from someone who has done the job.

One-to-one professional mentoring with Euan Wilmshurst, for senior communications, engagement, and advocacy leads and managers across philanthropy, non-profits, and social impact. Sessions are built around the mentee's actual work.

Everyone has a view on communications. Few have done the job at a senior level.

Comms leads spend their days advising everyone else. It is rare that anyone experienced advises them. Whether they lead a team or work alone, the craft has to be learned somewhere.

Euan mentors senior communications, engagement, and advocacy leads and managers, one to one. A scoping session sets the agenda. Working sessions follow, themed to the mentee's priorities and paced to their calendar, with a framing note before each one and a written summary after it, so that what is worked out in the room survives contact with the week that follows.

The sessions use the mentee's live material. The strategy in draft, the board paper due next month, and the decisions in front of them all move forward through the mentoring.

The questions mentees bring.

Every mentee sets their own agenda. These are the kinds of questions the sessions are built around.

  1. What does really good look like for a function like mine?
  2. How do I move from executing well to choosing what to do and when?
  3. Which audiences matter most when I cannot reach them all?
  4. How do I measure work whose impact resists measurement?
  5. How do I take a confident recommendation to my chief executive or board?
  6. What should I learn next, and who can teach me?

What the mentoring includes

A defined engagement with a clear cadence. Each element is there to move the mentee and their work forward.

Working sessions

A scoping session sets the agenda. Themed working sessions follow, in person or remote, each shaped by what the mentee needs next.

Framing notes and write-ups

A short framing note before each session, and a written summary after it recording the thinking and the next steps.

The mentee's live material

Sessions work on the strategy in draft, the board paper due next month, and the decisions in front of the mentee now.

Between the sessions

Input within reason when something live comes up, on a defined cadence agreed at the start.

A peer network

Introductions to people doing the same job in other organisations across philanthropy, non-profits, and social impact.

Mentoring, not coaching.

The two are often used interchangeably. They are different things.

Euan Wilmshurst is not a certified coach and does not claim to be one. He is a practitioner who has run communications, advocacy, and social impact functions inside The Coca-Cola Company, IBM, Pearson, and The LEGO Foundation over thirty years, and led Burson-Marsteller in Singapore as its CEO and Market Leader. The mentoring draws on that experience and the judgement that came with it.

Where formal coaching is the right tool, he says so and recommends qualified coaches.
